The small South Tyneside village of Whitburn lies midway between South Shields and Sunderland in the ceremonial county of Tyne and Wear, but at one stage in its history it was part of County Durham. It is on the north-east coast and in the late 17th century it held races on Whitburn-Lizard. The only recorded meeting in the village was on Saturday 25th March 1699 when a £25 Plate was contested over 3 heats of 4 miles, with each horse carrying 11 stone. Entries of each horse, mare or gelding had to be made in Whitburn by Saturday 18th March 1699. No further evidence exists of other meetings in the village.
